Is Swedish Candy Halal?
Gelatin is the question almost everyone is really asking. Here's a clear, honest guide.
It's one of the most common questions we get: "Is this candy halal?" More often than not, what people really want to know is whether it contains gelatin — and where that gelatin comes from. Let's break it down clearly and honestly.
Why gelatin is the key question
Most gummy and chewy sweets get their bounce from gelatin, which is usually derived from pork or other animals. For anyone following a halal diet, animal-derived gelatin is the single biggest thing to check — and it's the reason so many shoppers search for "gelatin-free" and "halal" candy in the same breath.
The good news: a lot of Swedish foam candy is gelatin-free
Here's where Swedish candy stands out. Much of the foam (skum) candy from BUBS, along with our dedicated Veggie range, is made without gelatin — which is exactly why these products carry a vegan label. No gelatin means the most common halal concern simply isn't there.
The honest caveat: "gelatin-free" is not the same as "certified halal"
We want to be straight with you. A product being gelatin-free or vegan is a strong start, but a formal halal certification also considers other details — such as alcohol-based flavourings or glazing agents, and colourings like carmine (E120, which is insect-derived). Unless a product carries an official halal certification, we can't label it "certified halal."
Gelatin-free favourites to start with
These popular lines are labelled vegan / gelatin-free:
- BUBS Wild Strawberry / Pomegranate — fruity, soft and a customer favourite.
- BUBS Sour Tuttifrutti Rhomb Foam — a sour, all-fruit classic.
- BUBS Raspberry / Blueberry Ovals — berry-sweet foam ovals.
- BUBS Raspberry / Liquorice Skulls — the iconic sweet-and-salty skull.
- Veggie Skulls (Fizzy, Sour Melon, Mango, Blueberry) — made without gelatin.
The bottom line
If your main concern is animal gelatin, you're in luck: a large share of Swedish foam candy is gelatin-free and vegan-labelled, which is why it's so well loved by halal shoppers. Just remember that gelatin-free is a great filter, not a certification — so for strict requirements, check the label, and reach out if you'd like a hand.
